Ilha Grande, Brazil is an island about 120 miles south of Rio Janeiro and boasts approximately 200 beaches. Historically a pirates’ hideaway this island is great if you enjoy hiking, kayaking, snorkeling, diving or just plain getting away from it ALL. I do mean ALL because it is fairly primitive and so it would not be everyone’s cup of tea! There are no cars on the island except for a few very small police cars and emergency vehicles. Only very simple accommodations (posadas) or camping are available. The vegetation is luxuriant since there is much of the Atlantic forest still remaining on the island and if you are lucky you may glimpse unusual birds, iguanas or monkeys in this protected reserve.
